Within the framework of the “Open Basin” sub-grant project, two-day English online courses were held on May 2-3, aiming at developing the English language proficiency of the young people participating in the project in the field of tourism and improving conversational English skills with tourists. The training courses were conducted by project expert and translator Silva Keveyan.
An English-Armenian vocabulary and dialogues in the given languages, with their translations, were compiled for the training courses, which were previously provided to the participants.
For the purpose of teaching English to the participating young people in a fairly accessible way, the training courses were conducted through a presentation, aimed at teaching the participants English words, phrases and dialogues in different possible situations in which tourists may appear, and how to apply them in context.
During the training, tourism as a theory, its origin and the root of the word and related expressions, with their translations, and their application in context were interpreted in English. In order to engage the participants and make the discussion interactive, the types of tourism and related words were discussed in English with the help of questions, especially the emphasis was placed on the phrases and phrasal verbs often applied incorrectly. After the first training course, the participants were given a task of making up situations in English,applying the pre-provided vocabulary, using a word group of at least 10 words. It aimed at testing the knowledge of the participants and teaching them to apply words correctly in context.
During the second training course, some of the participants represented their tasks, then some situations (for example, at the airport, hotel, restaurant, etc.) separately were dis
cussed, and the expressions typical of the English culture used in these certain situations were interpreted from the grammatical and semantic point of view, with the help of their Armenian translations given in parallel, which were carried out by means of question and answer method.During the training, the participants were introduced to the types of hotels and guesthouses and their differences in English through examples, to the fixed and frequently used, as well as semantically confusing English words and phrases, based on the peculiarities of different cultures in the situations of using hotel and restaurant services, means of transports, going sightseeing, by representingtheir translation solutions. At the end of the course, the participants were given a test consisting of 50 questions.
Due to the interest and enthusiasm of the participants, their new ideas, suggestions and unique solutions given to the problems, the two-day training courses were held in a rather interesting and effective way.
